Replace your AC filters on time.
According to the Department of Energy, replacing your old, dirty AC filter with a fresh one can save you 5% to 15% more on your energy bill each month. All you have to do is remember to buy and replace your AC filters every one to two months during the summer season.
Have a service technician inspect your unit yearly.
At the start of each season, call in the professionals to inspect your AC unit. They will check the evaporator coil and clean out any debris that could restrict airflow. A professional will also give your unit a quick check-up and assess it’s overall health. Most units last 10 to 15 years, but will require repairs along the way. Regular inspections will help you catch minor issues before they become major (and costly!) problems.

AC units, even if they are well-maintained, will start to give out in 10 to 15 years. Upgrading to an AC unit with a higher SEER rating can greatly reduce your energy costs. SEER 13 is the minimum, but you can opt for a higher SEER rating at the time of installation—just ask your service technician to help you explore your options!
